UI Designers often face the difficulties when choosing the perfect patterns for “mobile-centric” thinking. The challenge is how to create a single interface that will work well on multiple devices such as iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
What’s the basic?
It is always good to spend a time, about two weeks for beginner, to familiarize with the basic interaction design pattern both iOS and Android. Google’s Material Design is a very good example to cover guidelines, dos and don’ts plus the theory behind every design. On the other hand, Apple’s design principles is also a very good reference for design libraries.
Once you are truly familiar with the devices your users rely on 24/7/365,
it will be easier for you to design a beautiful app.
What are the good and bad of using the basic pattern libraries?
The good things of following the existing patterns is it is easier for developing the app. It is also user friendly since most users are familiarize with the navigation. There are no bad things of using the basic pattern libraries, knowing and following the existing pattern is good, but there is nothing wrong for UI designers to bend the rules or completely ignore them and still create a beautiful app. Visual beauty can be shown through design elements, color, contrast, grid, etc. Some navigation like Springboard, Cards, List Menu, Dashboard, can be designed out of the box and still attract users. For examples:
- Emerging Patterns
It is a new trend in mobile, whereby hiding certain elements such as header or tap bar while the user is scrolling or swiping down the content.
Skeuomorphism pattern is the interface designed to represent their real-world counterparts. It aims to create a 3D look, unlike flat design, Skeuomorphism is the dominant pattern for game design and Virtual Reality (VR).
In conclusion UI Designers should understand the foundation of UI Patterns and standards as the first step before designing the app. After that, it is up to them to creatively exploring new patterns to deliver the usability that has been determined by the UX Designers. Good Mobile Apps is created with the help of Aesthetic-Usability Effect; a pleasing interface that appeal the users to stick with the app. It is always good to define a UI Pattern that supports usability, turning an attractive interface design into a more usable Mobile Apps.
